by Jerry H. Miller

‘BICKERDIKE’ EXPERIMENTAL POSTMARKS AND USE IN GERMANY..

1898 - 1916

In an effort to more effectively postmark both out-bound and in-bound mail, the German Postal Service tested and evaivated

no fewer than thirteen German or foreign-manufactured postmarking machines between 1866 - 1914. One of those machines tested was the ‘Bickerdike’ manufactured by the

‘Canadian Postal Supply Company’.

The first eight machines tested by the German Reichsposf were North American-built machines with subsequent machines manufactured under license in Germany by the ‘Deutsche

Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken’ of Berlin & Karlsruhe.

The ‘Bickerdike’ became the first effective and widely-used postmarking machine in Germany

with forty-one machines operational nation-wide.

Illustration of the electrically-operated

‘Bickerdike’ Postmarking Machine able to postmark circa 5000 Mail Units/Hour. —

This postal exhibit shows the evolution of experimental and field-use postmarks applied by the ‘Bickerdike’

Postmarking Machine .. tested, evaluated and introduced by the Post Office in Germany between the

years 1898-1901 with field-use until 1916.

EXPANDED TRIAL PHASE USAGE .. 1901-1902

After three years of experimental trials with two Bickerdike Machines, i.e. one each operating at the ‘Berlin C2’ and ‘Hamburg 1’

Post Offices, the Reichspost concluded that the machines were satisfactorily effective and efficient.

In 1901, the Reichspost purchased an additional six machines from the Canadian Postal Supply Company of Montreal, Canada, for

allocation to the following post offices:

Berlin: Post Office ‘W 8’ Berlin: Post Office ‘SW 12’ Berlin: Post Office ‘SW 19’ Berlin: Reichspost Museum

Leipzig: Post Office ’13’ (Two Machines)

With the introduction of those machines, the attractive

‘REICHSPOST POSTAL FLAG’ WAS NOW PART OF THE POSTMARK, CONSISTING OF ‘DATER DIAL’ WITH ‘FLAG WITH BANNER, TASSELS, CROWN & POSTAL HORN’ OBLITERATOR IN USE BETWEEN 1901-1902.

‘BELING & LUBKE’ INFLUENCE

In May, 1902, the ‘Canadian Postal Supply Company’ of Montreal, Canada, patent holder for the ‘Bickerdike’ Postmarking Machine transferred their patent & European sales rights to the German

Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken of Karlsruhe.

In addition to warranty responsibility for the existing Canadian-built machines, the new company

proceeded to up-date postmark dies with NEW ‘REVOLVING DATER-DIALS’,

as used in the ‘Beling & Libke’ Machines being tested at the ‘Berlin C2’ during 1901-1902 along

with new-design flag obliterators for most locations.

All new purchase orders for ‘Bickerdike’ Machines were henceforth built and supplied by the Deutsche Waffen-und

Munitionsfabriken of Karlsruhe.

PSEUDO MACHINE POSTMARKS 1901 - 1912 FLAG POSTMARK COTTBUS *(BAZAR)

DURING THE PERIOD 1901-1912, A NUMBER OF POSTMARKS WERE USED IN GERMANY WHICH APPEARED TO BE MACHINE-APPLIED BUT WERE NOT, AND, ARE TODAY REFERRED TO AS ‘PSEUDO MACHINE POSTMARKS’.

In November, 1901, and again in May, 1912, a special fund-raising charitable ‘bazaar’ was held at the City of Cottbus to raise funds for imperial memorials (1901) and a rehabilitation clinic (1912). The postal engraving-company of ‘Gleichmann’ prepared a patriotic postal hand-stamp for the earlier event (used also for the later), which appeared very similar in design to those being used on the Bickerdike and Beling & Libke Machines being evaluated and tested by the Reichspost in 1901.

Postmark Usage: 6, 7, 8, 13 & 26 November 19701 & 8,9 10 May 1912

Postmark: 25mm diameter dater dial indicating ‘Cottbus *(Bazar)* with a postal flag with crown, banner with tassels & postal hom as the obliterator right of the dater dial.
